Why is there a Masonic symbol on the United States dollar bill?

The Eye of Providence that appears on the dollar bill was added to Great Seal of the United States to represent divine guidance and favor. The symbol is often associated with Free Masonry, but its use by the Masons dates 14 years after the creation of the Great Seal.

The Great Seal was designed in 1776 by a committee whose only Masonic member was Benjamin Franklin. It is believed that the use of the Eye of Providence was suggested by the artist Pierre du Simitiere, who was not a Mason. Also known as the All-Seeing Eye of God, the eye stands at the top of a pyramid of 13 building blocks. Above the symbol is the Latin phrase "Annuit Coeptis," meaning "Providence has approved our undertakings."
