The written test for a driver's license or learner's permit covers material usually found in the driver's manual for a given state. This includes traffic rules, road signs, laws and regulations. The test is typically in multiple-choice format, and states usually allow applicants to take it up to three times.
The written DMV test is designed to determine whether prospective drivers understand the local rules of the road, how to read traffic signs and how different driving laws affect them. Many of the road sign questions show an image of a road sign and ask the applicant to pick what it means. Another typical question asks applicants to indicate which vehicle has the right of way in a traffic diagram.
