What is the material used for a parachute?

Most parachute canopies are made from a durable, woven nylon fabric. The special blend of rip-stop fabric is often designed using zero-porosity (ZP) technology that improves safety and overall performance. This material replaced the canvas and silk used in the past as a more elastic, less expensive and mildew-resistant alternative.

The special rip-stop weave pattern greatly reduces the chance of potential rips from spreading, while most nylons are treated with zero-porosity technology that prevents the passage of air through its skin. This ZP treatment also significantly enhances the parachute's flight characteristics for longer fabric life, improved glide ratio and softer landings.
