What are math regents?

The Regents Examinations in Mathematics are examinations high school students in the state of New York are required to pass to satisfy graduation requirements and receive their diplomas. Students choose between tests in geometry, integrated algebra and trigonometry designed to evaluate their math abilities.

A student seeking a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation must pass all three mathematics tests. The New York Regents Math Examination was first given in 2003 and has received a great deal of attention in the media regarding the fairness and effectiveness of the test. Critiques center on imprecise wording of questions and the use of calculators during the test.
