The quadratic formula as it is known today was published by Ren? Descartes in his book "La G?om?trie." However, he did not invent the quadratic formula by himself; simple versions of it have been used for thousands of years.

In 2000 B.C., Babylonians used a simple version of the quadratic formula. The Greeks, Egyptians and Chinese also used simple forms of the quadratic formula. In 628 A.D., the Indian mathematician Brahmagupta described the quadratic formula in words but not in symbols. His description of it most closely resembled the quadratic formula used today. In 1545 A.D., Girolamo Cardano put together all that was known previously about the quadratic formula. Finally, in 1637 Ren? Descartes published the formula used today.
