What is the maximum size for carry-on luggage on an airline?

The maximum size for carry-on luggage allowed on a flight depends on the airline. Delta, for example, allows items measuring 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches and weighing 40 pounds or less. Alaska Airlines allows bags measuring up to 10 inches by 17 inches by 24 inches.

United's limits are the same as Delta's, while Southwest has a more generous limit of 24 inches by 16 inches by 10 inches. Hawaiian Airlines also uses the United and Delta limits, but carry-on bags must not weigh more than 25 pounds. If a bag looks questionable, attendants ask the owner to place it inside of a metal framed bag sizing template to check the dimensions. Owners must check anything that doesn't fit.
