What does it mean when a file says that the PS2 memory card has corrupted data?

When the PS2 alerts the user about corrupted data on the memory card, it generally indicates that the console is unable to retrieve the game data saved on the card. This can happen for a number of reasons, such as removal of the memory card while data is being saved, or the use of off-brand memory cards.
When data corrupts, the corrupted files will often have to be deleted completely, which unfortunately results in a loss of the saved game data. Corrupted files can be deleted by inserting the card into the PlayStation, turning the console on, and navigating to the menu's "Browser" option. The user will be presented with a list of files and given the option to delete them.
