What is the meaning of "triangulation?"

According to Northwestern University, triangulation is a way of determining an object's location by using the locations of other things. It is used to find the epicenter of earthquakes and to determine the locations of spacecraft.

Triangulation can also be used in psychology to mean a situation in which one family member refuses to communicate directly with another family member, but communicates with that person through a third family member, forming a triangle. When used in the social sciences, this term indicates that two or more methods are used in a study in order to increase the reliability of the results.
