The medical term for an enlarged heart is cardiomegaly, according to Mayo Clinic. An enlarged heart can occur due to different conditions.

Most commonly, an enlarged heart is due to high blood pressure or coronary artery disease, as stated by WebMD. If the enlargement results in the hearts inability to pump blood normally, this can result in congestive heart failure which can lead to death. An enlarged heart should be taken vary seriously. Symptoms of an enlarged heart include leg swelling, weight gain, fatigue, shortness of breath and increased abdominal girth. Treatment for the issue depends on the condition that is causing it.
