Melanoma of the eye is a type of cancer that forms on the melanin-producing cells of the eye. Also known as ocular melanoma or choroidal melanoma, eye melanoma develops in the part of the eye known as the uvea, according to the Melanoma Research Foundation.
Doctors believe that eye melanoma comes about as a result of erroneous DNA in healthy eyes that causes cells to multiply out of control, notes the Mayo Clinic. The mutated cells collect in the eye to form a melanoma.
Eye melanoma has a greater prevalence among Caucasians, people with light-colored eyes, or people with certain inherited skin disorders. Exposure to ultraviolet light and increasing age are also risk factors, states the Mayo Clinic.
