How do you melt ice?

The application of a sufficient amount of heat melts ice. As a solid, the molecules of ice occupy a relatively stable crystal lattice structure. A lot of heat is required to break the bonds, and only then does the temperature start to rise and the ice melt.
Placing ice in water at room temperature starts the melting process. Adding the appropriate solutes, such as salt or sugar, lowers the freezing point, which requires a lower water temperature in order for the crystal lattice to form. Other methods for melting ice include spreading urea, sand, ground coffee or alfalfa meal on the ground.
