What is meningioma surgery?

According to WebMD, meningioma surgery is a medical procedure that involves the removal of tumors from membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, called meninges. Most meningiomas are benign and not cancerous.
Mayo Clinic describes a meningioma as a tumor that originates from the meninges. These tumors are most common in elderly women, although they appear in males and females of any age. The surgical procedure to remove them requires a craniotomy, removal of part of the skull, to allow the surgeon access to the tumor. After removing as much of the tumor as possible, the surgeon replaces the part of the skull bone that was removed, states WebMD.
