Meri was born on January 16, 1971. Her hometown was Alameda, California. Meri married Kody Brown in 1990, when she was 19 years old. The couple has one daughter, who was born in 1995.

The Brown family practices polygamy. The television show name "Sister Wives" directly comes from this practice. The show is about Kody, Meri and several other wives and children and how things work in their every day life as polygamists.
