In messenger RNA, what does each codon specify?

In messenger RNA, each codon specifies for an amino acid. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. Messenger RNA codons code for a total of 20 amino acids as well as three stop sequences that halt synthesis of a protein.

Each codon on messenger RNA is a series of three nucleic acids. Nucleotides may be guanine, cytosine, adenine or uracil. Together, the triplet set of nucleic acids code for a specific amino acid. For example, the triplet set of AUG, which are the nucleotides adenine, uracil and guanine, respectively, correspond to the amino acid methionine. There are a total of 64 possible codons.
