Painter Salvador Dali's 1937 "Metamorphosis of Narcissus" is an outstanding example of art shape-shifting. A color reproduction of this painting is found at the British art site, TATE. Narcissus was a shallow, vain and callow young man who was punished by the gods for his selfishness. Dali's painting reflects Narcissus as he was and what he became when the gods relented. Dali was fascinated by the double images of hallucination and delusion, which are clearly reflected in this piece.
