Metanx is a medical food prescribed for the dietary management of nerve complications related to diabetes, according to Physicians’ Desk Reference. Metanx is used only under medical supervision.
Metanx is also used to treat raised amounts of homocysteine in the blood, inherited conditions that cause excretion of sulphur in urine, and vitamin deficiency. Metanx may pose risks when taken together with medications such as pyridoxine, levodopa, pyrimethamine and hydantoins, states WebMD. Side effects associated with Metanx are rare but can be severe. They include bronchospasm, itching, rashes, allergy reaction and redness of skin. Slight and infrequent diarrhea may also be experienced with Metanx.
