Metanx, a multivitamin complex, is prescribed to manage hyperhomocysteinemia, a condition characterized by elevated homocysteine levels, states Drugs.com. Metanx is also used as a nutritional supplement to treat systemic vitamin deficiency and certain genetic disorders that present with urinary excretion of sulfur as the primary symptom, notes WebMD.
Metanx is not recommended for use by pregnant or nursing women or those who suffer from anemia, notes Drugs.com. The side effects of Metanx are mostly minor and include diarrhea, sleepiness, a tingling sensation in the skin and a feeling of numbness.
