Cincinnati, Ohio earned the strange nickname of Porkopolis thanks to its thriving pork packaging industry in the 1800s. At this time, Cincinnati was the United States' leading hog packaging city, and pigs were such a prominent part of Cincinnati's landscape that roaming herds of pigs could be seen throughout the city.

The pork industry is no longer such a large presence in Cincinnati, though the Porkopolis nickname may endure in some parts of the city, particularly among those who find it amusing. Porkopolis isn't Cincinnati's only nickname. The American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow reportedly referred to the city as the Queen of the West.
