What is military discipline?

Military discipline is the set of rules that are ingrained in soldiers through their training and ensures compliance to orders to create a cohesive military unit. In most countries, each military body has its own authority responsible for military discipline.
Often, to instill military discipline, leaders of the world's armies go to great lengths to train their soldiers. During World War I, for example, soldiers were often subjected to cruel and brutal training in an effort to strip them of their individuality and make them form a group that would carry out orders without question. Those soldiers who refused to conform would be subjected to punishment ranging from humiliation to flogging.
