As of April 2015, the minimum wage in Texas is $7.25 per hour, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Texas's minimum wage is adopted from the federal rate, and is one of 14 states to do so.

The Texas Minimum Wage Act is overseen by the Texas Workforce Commission and provides a minimum wage for nonexempt employees. In addition, the TWC gives employees two years to take legal action if they believe they were paid at a less than legal rate. In Houston, a minimum-wage increase was proposed in 1997 but defeated in a referendum. Houston is the third-least-expensive city of the 20 most-populous areas nationally, as stated by the Greater Houston Partnership.
