What is The Mitten by Jan Brett?

Jan Brett retold and illustrated a Ukrainian folktale in her 1989 book "The Mitten." The story is about Nicki, who asks his grandmother to knit a pair of snow-white mittens. His grandmother initially refuses, saying he will lose them in the snow. However, she gives in and knits the mittens.

"The Mitten" relates what happens when Nicki drops a mitten in the forest and does not know it. Some animals crawl inside the mitten to keep warm. Brett's illustrations depict the antics of the animals and include Nicki's activities in the page borders.
