What is an MKV file?

An MKV file is a video file format that was developed in Russia in 2002. The file acronym is short for Matroska Video files and is named after the Russian word "matryoshka" meaning nesting dolls. The format was developed by Steve Lhomme, Lasse Kärkkäinen and a team of programmers.

MKV files are programmed to be container formats for multimedia that allow incorporation of video, audio and subtitle elements into a single file, even if they are encoded differently. As of 2014, the MKV format includes features such as online streaming compatibility, error recovery, metadata support and menu and chapter support. As of 2014, the MKV file format is not supported by all media players.
