The concept of spring break stems from a marketing idea developed by the city of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in 1938. During the 1960s, the tradition grew in popularity, especially among college students. Party-goers were encouraged to visit Florida through advertisements claiming nonstop drinking, even though a law was passed in the late 1980s to prohibit public drinking.
