Where do you find a motor identification number on a Ford?

Ford owners can find the motor identification number of most engines under the coil attaching bolts. The number is a code that describes the vehicle's design, model year, production date, engineering part number and service part number.

On some eight-cylinder engines, identification numbers are located in another place. On a 352 engine, the tag is under the dipstick tube; on 330, 361 and 391 engines, it is under the heat indicator bulb; on 401, 477 and 534 engines, it is under the carburetor attaching stud.

Each alphanumeric motor identification number is unique. While the code may identify the motor as belonging to a Lincoln, Mercury or Thunderbird, Ford sometimes used different parts on different models for the sake of cost, meaning that all identification numbers may not be accurate.
