Mount Vesuvius is a stratovolcano that formed after the collapse of the Somma volcano. This volcano’s height is approximately 1,277 meters, and the width of its base is 48 kilometers. This volcano is thousands of years old and has undergone four different types of eruptions that include explosive Plinian eruptions.
Mount Vesuvius is most famous for its major eruption in A.D. 79. This eruption was a Plinian eruption that buried the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum under meters of ash. The last eruption of Mount Vesuvius was in 1944.
