While parts of Mount Whitney are in Sequoia National Park, the John Muir Trail and Inyo National Forest, there is no Mount Whitney National Park. Mount Whitney is a mountain on the border of Inyo and Tulare counties in California, on the east side of the Great Western Divide.
Mount Whitney is the tallest mountain in the lower 48 U.S. states. Anyone wishing to climb the mountain or enter the Mount Whitney zone needs a permit from the U.S. National Park Service.
Due to its location, Mount Whitney is difficult to reach. The best way to reach it, according to the National Park Service, is a 10.7-mile trail from Whitney Portal, which is 13 miles west of Lone Pine.
