How much is a 1933 English penny worth?

The 1933 British penny is worth at least £40,000, as of 2014. It is one of the rarest coins of the 20th century as only seven of them were minted.

Due to a surplus of pennies already in circulation, no pennies were scheduled for production in 1933. However, the King requested that the Royal Mint produce pennies to place under the foundation stones of notable university and church buildings to be constructed that year. One such penny was stolen from the Church of St. Cross in 1970 and was never recovered. Another penny remains in the stone foundation of the University of London, two are in British museums and three are held by private collectors.
