How much does the average American have saved?

In 2014, the average American had about $58,000 saved for retirement. Four out of 10 said they hadn't saved anything at all, according to a 2014 BlackRock Global Investor survey of 4,000 Americans. BlackRock, the world's largest investment manager, also found that women had $34,881 in retirement savings, compared with men at $76,787, on average.

Not related to retirement, but savings in general, a 2014 survey from Bankrate found that about 25 percent of Americans confessed to not having any emergency savings. People between 30 and 49 years old were found to be the least likely of any age group to have emergency savings.
