In 2012, the median wage for correctional officers was $38,970 a year. This is the official figure coming from the U.S. Department of Labor and Statistics, which keeps records of this type of data for all jobs in the United States. The department says the top 10 percent earned about $69,600, and the bottom 10 percent earned $27,000.
Some private sector companies also monitor pay information for U.S. occupations, including correctional officers. PayScale, an online company that records salary data, pegs the 2014 annual average salary of these officers at between $24,496 and $56,927. The median is $34,996, for the period.
