According to The People History, the market price of a single loaf of bread was about 10 cents in 1944. This reflected consumer conditions toward the end of World War II.
Prior to the commencement of World War II, the market price of bread, like the prices of other day-to-day consumables, was within the affordable price range for most people, and supplies were readily available. However, after World War II began, supplies of almost all types of consumables, including food products, became scarce. The shortage became so severe that citizens of the U.S. and the U.K. were encouraged to grow vegetables in their own gardens to fight the ongoing food shortage.
