As of February 2015 18.4 cents per gallon is the rate of federal tax charged on gasoline. The federal tax charged on diesel is 24.4 cents per gallon. A state tax is also charged on gasoline; however, the exact amount of the tax varies based on the specific state.
On average, states charge approximately 24 cents per gallon as a gasoline tax. The Washington Post states that the amount of federal tax charged on gasoline has not changed since 1993, when it was raised to the current rate of 18.4 cents. This is because the federal gas tax is not associated with inflation, instead being a fixed rate.
