As of 2014, there are 147.3 million ounces of gold at the U.S. Bullion Depository in Fort Knox, Ky. Valued at $42.22 per ounce, this equates to $6.2 billion.
In 1941, there were 649.6 million ounces of gold in the depository. Each bar of gold measures 7 inches by 3 5/8 inches by 1 3/4 inches and weighs 400 ounces, which is equivalent to 27.5 pounds.
In the past, the depository has housed important government documents, such as the Declaration of Independence, the Gettysburg Address and the U.S. Constitution. It has also stored important documents and items from other government agencies.
