Half-cent coins were manufactured from 1793 to 1857 in five different designs. All legally minted half pennies were milled at the Philadelphia mint and have smooth edges with no mint marks. Half cents are made of 100 percent copper. The half penny is the smallest U.S. denomination ever minted and is valued at 1/200 of a dollar when in circulation. The half penny was discontinued with the Coinage Act of February 21, 1857.
