As of May 2013, the average annual salary for chemists was $77,740 per year, or $37.37 per hour, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Ten percent of chemists made at or above $122,830 per year. The lowest 10 percent earned at or below $41,350 per year.
Among top employment sectors, the BLS indicated that chemists in the federal executive branch averaged $105,430 per year. Those in research and development averaged $87,940. The District of Columbia had the highest state or territory average at $109,460 per year. Maryland was next at $108,290. Delaware was the third highest at $92,850.
