According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, lifeguards fall into the employment category of recreational protective service workers, and, in 2013, their average hourly rate was $10.05. This classification includes workers who supervise pools, beaches or ski slopes.

If employed full-time, these workers had an average yearly salary of $20,890. The BLS estimated that the lowest-earning lifeguards made $7.87 per hour, while the top 10 percent brought in $14.03. Local governments employed the most recreational protective service workers, with an average hourly pay of $10.74. The top-paying industries were state governments and religious organizations. Both offered average wages of more than $14 an hour.
