Retired NFL players are paid benefits on a sliding scale based on the number and actual years they played. The benefits are paid to vested players who have at least three credited seasons with one year played after 1992, or four or more seasons with at least one played after 1982, or those who have five or more credited seasons.
As of 2014, each credited season earns a benefit credit. Depending on the year the credit was earned the sum ranges from $250 for seasons played prior to 1982 and $760 for seasons played between 2018 and 2020. The benefit credits represent a monthly amount with a normal retirement age of 55.
