As of May 2012, NHL referees earn a salary ranging from $110,000 to $255,000 each year. Each game usually has two referees who are required to have excellent skating skills.

On average, an NHL referee earns $1,402 to $2,682 per game he or she judges. Intensive training is required for a person to qualify as an NHL referee. They also need to be fast enough to get out of the way of players and the puck. Good physical fitness is also necessary so as to be able to prevent fights between players. In addition, referees must have a good understanding of the NHL rulebook.
