MLB umpires are paid between $120,000 and $350,000 a year depending on the rank and experience. To become an umpire, an individual may be required to join an umpire training school and complete a five-week course before securing a professional position.
Some of the most important qualities to posses when looking to secure an umpire job include confidence, knowledge of baseball rules and ethics, good communication skills, athletic abilities and passion for the profession. Umpires normally start off their careers by working in lower levels, later getting promoted from one level to the next until they reach the triple A class.
