According to Salary.com, the median annual income for a secondary teacher, also called a high school teacher, is $55,712, as of 2014. Statistically, 50 percent of high school teachers earn less than the median salary.

Salary.com states that several factors impact the final annual earnings of a high school teacher. Teaching in a public or private school greatly impacts salary. Location, years of teaching experience, the size of the school district and education level all drive the final offered rate. For example, a teacher holding a bachelor's degree earns less than a teacher holding a master's degree.

As of 2014, the median total compensation is $79,439. This includes benefits, such as 403B (the teacher retirement plan), health care, pension plans and paid time off.
