Sidewinder snakes vary greatly in size and weight. The smallest sidewinders weigh as little as 2 ounces; the largest weigh up to 1 pound. The three subspecies of sidewinder snakes differ mainly in size.
The largest sidewinders grow up to 2 ? feet in length. Female sidewinders grow larger than the males. Because of their small size, sidewinders do not have as much venom as other rattlesnake species, although the venom is just as poisonous. Sidewinders live in the southwestern United States and northwest Mexico. They like sandy deserts and low, rocky hills. Sidewinders eat mice, small lizards and birds.
