One sugar cube, which is equivalent to one teaspoon of sugar, weighs approximately 4 grams. With sugar cubes, coffee and tea drinkers can use one, two or more lumps of sugar to sweeten their drinks.

The invention of the sugar cube came about as a result of a kitchen accident. Julia Rad was the wife of a sugar refinery executive. She cut her finger one day while chopping up large hunks of sugar. Mrs. Rad complained to her husband about the lack of teacup-sized sugar pieces.

Jakub Rad invented a way to process sugar into square cubes. In 1840, he created the first sugar cubes and presented them to his wife. Rad patented his sugar cube press in 1843.
