How much does the World Cup trophy weigh?

According to FIFA, the current trophy as of 2014 weighs 13.6 pounds and is made of solid 18-carat gold with two layers of malachite at the base. The World Cup trophy used in the 2014 tournament was introduced in 1974.

University of Nottingham chemist Martyn Poliakoff says that the current trophy cannot possibly be made of solid gold. If that were true, he says, it would weigh 154 to 176 pounds. Thus, it would be too difficult for a member of the winning team to lift the trophy above his head, as is customarily done in celebration after winning the World Cup.
