According to WebMD, mucous colitis, also referred to as irritable bowel syndrome, is a common digestive condition that causes accelerated mobility of the intestines. Symptoms include diarrhea, constipation and abdominal discomfort.

NYU Langone Medical Center explains that the specific cause of mucous colitis is unknown and symptoms tend to fluctuate. Additional symptoms include mucus-tinged stools, gas and bloating. Certain factors, such as smoking, excessive stress, menstruation and excess abdominal gas, may exacerbate mucous colitis symptoms. While there is no cure for mucous colitis, symptoms can be managed with medications that minimize abdominal spasms, anti-diarrhea medications, fiber bulking supplements and relaxation exercises. Introducing fruits and whole grains into the diet and eliminating high-fat foods can also help to minimize symptoms.
