Do mums grow back every year?

Mums are a tender perennial flower that can return yearly depending on where and when they are planted. If planted in the spring or summer, they can establish good root structure and survive the winter. If planted in late autumn, however, they generally do not survive and return in spring.
In areas with cold winters, it is advisable to clip blooms off the plants and mulch thoroughly prior to the first frost. Foliage should be left in place for the winter. Warmer climates give mums a better chance of returning as a perennial.
Generally, mums thrive in sunny, well-drained locations. They should be buried shallow, as they have surface roots that can suffocate if placed too deep.
