The squat is an exercise that works all the muscles in the lower body including the thighs, hamstrings, calves, hips and glutes. Squats also help strengthen the bones, tendon insertions and ligaments in the lower body.
The squat is one of the three primary lifts used in strength training, along with the bench press and the dead lift. The abdominal muscles, the shoulders and arms, the trunk muscles, the upper back and the lower back also play an important role in the exercise. Hence, these muscles are also strengthened with regular squats.
Squats are considered to be one of the most effective types of exercise for working the entire body.
