What is the mythological origin of the word "geology"?

The word geology derives ultimately from the name for the Greek goddess Gaia, who is sometimes known as Ge. In Greek mythology, Gaia is generally depicted as arising out of the void along with the sky, Ouranos, and the sea, Pontos. She was the personification of the Earth itself.

In some versions of the story, Gaia alone was the first deity. She gave birth to the sky and the sea and took Ouranos to be her husband. With him, she gave birth to the titans: a race of immortal giants led by Cronos. Cronos, with the help of Gaia, eventually overthrew Ouranos and became Gaia's consort. He was that overthrown by his own son, Zeus.
