The name of the chemical compound MgCl2 is magnesium chloride. These salts are ionic halides and are highly soluble in water. Magnesium chloride has a colorless crystalline appearance and can be extracted from brine or sea water. Some magnesium chloride is made from solar evaporation of sea water.

Magnesium chloride has many uses. It is used for dust control and soil erosion, road stabilization and in the production of magnesium metal. It is also used in wastewater treatment, fertilizer, fireproofing agents, textiles, cements, fire extinguishers, refrigeration, brine and paper.

Magnesium chloride is also used in ice control. It’s used for de-icing sidewalks, highways and parking lots.
