The riderless horse in John F. Kennedy’s funeral procession was named Black Jack. The horse was born on Jan. 19, 1947 and was named after General John “Black Jack” Pershing.

Black Jack was purchased by the U.S. Army Quartermaster in 1953 and was the last horse to be branded with the Army’s U.S. brand and his serial number. The horse was selected for his appearance, as he was 15 hands tall and had a black coat with a small white star on his forehead. Black Jack was chosen as a caparisoned, or riderless, horse because he refused to let anyone ride him.
