What are some nandina varieties?

Although it is not technically a type of bamboo, nandina is a plant also known as "heavenly bamboo." Common varieties of nandina include Alba, Moyer's Red, Compacta, Sienna Sunrise, Filamentosa and Fire Power.

Nandina is a shrub that grows best in hardiness zones 6 to 9, which excludes most of the northern part of the United States. It has evergreen leaves and can be told from a true bamboo because most types produce bright red berries in the fall. The Yellow Berries variety is an exception. Nandina does best in soil that's well-drained but can also grow well in other types of soils, and it prefers full sun to shade. The berries of the nandina are poisonous to animals.
