Where is Nantucket located?

Nantucket is an island off the coast of Massachusetts. It's roughly 30 miles south of Cape Cod and 15 miles southeast of Martha's Vineyard. Nantucket is 49 square miles in area and has 82 miles of beaches.

Nantucket was founded in 1641 and was originally a whaling village. The whaling industry in Nantucket started to fade in the middle of the 19th century, leaving the island under-developed with many pre-Civil War buildings in place. In 1977, Nantucket, along with Martha's Vineyard, attempted and failed to secede from the state of Massachusetts. As of 2014, Nantucket is a popular tourist destination, especially in the summer, when the population is five times larger than it is the rest of the year.
